Friends, I wish you all a very Happy Rajasthan Day today! This morning, my "Chandu"—who has now attained a doctorate in Fine Arts and become Dr. Chandrashekhar Sain—sent me an invitation to a seminar being organized to mark the occasion of Rajasthan Day. This event was hosted by the Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur, focusing on the creative oeuvre, personality, and artistic contributions of the late Shri Jyoti Swarup, a renowned abstract artist from Rajasthan.

The seminar was scheduled for 5:00 PM, and the venue was the Rangayan Auditorium at the Jawahar Kala Kendra. I arrived at the entrance of the Rangayan Auditorium precisely at 5:00 PM, where an exhibition of the late Shri Jyoti Swarup’s abstract paintings had also been set up.

It is worth noting that the late Shri Jyoti Swarup was Rajasthan’s first modern painter and the first artist from the state to receive the National Award in Contemporary Art from the Lalit Kala Akademi—an achievement that remains a source of immense pride for the contemporary art landscape of Rajasthan.

Upon entering the Rangayan Auditorium, I saw my "Chandu"—now Dr. Chandrashekhar Sain—present in the dual capacity of both a greeter and an event coordinator, a sight that filled me with great joy. Also present in the auditorium were Dr. Shyam Singh Kachhawa (the brother of Shri Jyoti Swarup), the seminar’s keynote speaker Dr. Ambalal Damami, senior journalist and painter Shri Vinod Bhardwaj, and art scholar and keynote speaker Shri R.B. Gautam. After seeking their blessings, I took a couple of photographs of them with my camera before the seminar officially began. I was given the opportunity to sit in the front row of the auditorium. Furthermore, I had the distinct privilege of sitting alongside the Padma Shri-honored singing duo, the Ani-Gani Ustad brothers, and engaging in a conversation with them about Bikaner prior to the seminar. I also had the pleasure of the company of Shri Sandeep Sharma—son of the late art guru Shri Sumhendra Sharma—during this event. I even captured a selfie with him to preserve the memories of those moments.

The seminar commenced once all the keynote speakers had arrived at the Rangayan Auditorium. The announcer invited all the keynote speakers to the stage and also acknowledged the audience members by name—a list that included my own name, thereby formally marking my presence in the packed auditorium as someone attending to pay tribute to a veteran artist. My sincere appreciation goes to the team at Jawahar Kala Kendra and to the convener, Dr. Chandrashekhar Sain!

The hour-long seminar was moderated by Dr. Shyam Singh Kachhawa. The panel of speakers on stage included art critic Shri Hemant Shesh, writer on art and culture Dr. Ambalal Damami, veteran journalist and painter Shri Vinod Bhardwaj, art scholar R.B. Gautam, and Dr. Suresh Dimam, who joined the session online from London. The late Jyoti Swarup’s daughter was also invited to the stage, where the Director of Jawahar Kala Kendra—Padma Shri Ani-Gani—presented *uparnas* (honorary scarves) and commemorative folders to all the distinguished dignitaries seated on the dais as a mark of respect.

The seminar commenced with Dr. Shyam Singh Kachhawa providing a detailed overview of the late Jyoti Swarup’s creative journey. Following him, the microphone was handed to Shri Hemant Shesh—one of Jyoti Swarup’s close friends. He hailed the late Jyoti Swarup as the "first sentinel" of contemporary Rajasthani art during the 1960s. He singled out Jyoti Swarup’s abstract series *Dhwani* (Sound) and *Bheetar Ka Jungle* (The Inner Forest) as his finest creative achievements.
Subsequently, the microphone was passed to Dr. Ambalal, who read from his notes regarding Jyoti Swarup’s artistic oeuvre. In his address, he elucidated the style, medium, and technique employed in Jyoti Swarup’s paintings. He noted that Jyoti Swarup was as accomplished a poet, scientist, and sculptor as he was a painter; indeed, one of his sculptural works—a relief mural—remains installed to this day at the Sindhi Camp in Jaipur. In his address, art scholar R.B. Gautam stated that both he and Jyoti Swarup began their artistic journeys by drawing inspiration from the paintings of A.H. Muller; however, after subsequently attending the College of Art in Delhi, Jyoti Swarup was able to refine his own unique style of abstract art—a development that set him apart from other contemporary artists in Rajasthan.

Senior journalist and painter Mr. Vinod Bhardwaj, while sharing his thoughts, spoke of the close friendship and rapport he shared with Jyoti Swarup, describing him as a painter of profound depth and gravitas. He further affirmed that Swarup’s abstract works were created with a keen insight into—and a deep understanding of—the global art landscape.

As I listened to that seminar at Rangayan, I was transported back in time to a past symposium held in a meeting hall at the Jawahar Kala Kendra. That event was attended by the late Jyoti Swarup, art critic Dr. Nand Kishore Acharya, the former Director of the Jawahar Kala Kendra, and numerous other senior and young artists—and I, too, was present. During that symposium, Jyoti Swarup recounted a journey he had undertaken to the Hinglaj Mata Shakti Peeth in Balochistan (currently located in Pakistan). He revealed that upon entering the cave shrine to seek the *darshan* (sacred sight) of Hinglaj Mata, the resident priest had bound him to a solemn vow: that he must never—under any circumstances, not even by mistake—speak to anyone about what he saw, witnessed, or experienced within that cave. He honored that restriction throughout his entire life; yet, following that journey, both his paintings and his personality underwent a profound transformation.Even today, that silence—that unspoken sentiment—is reflected in his abstract paintings. After listening to him at the seminar, this is precisely the feeling that lingered with me: within his abstract works, there resides an "unspoken silence, eager to speak."

Jyoti Swarup Ji was a simple-hearted, resilient individual who lived a life of profound simplicity; his bicycle, his Himachali cap, and a cloth bag were his defining trademarks. He would often visit our college—the Rajasthan School of Art—or simply pass by it. Upon seeing him, no one could possibly have guessed that this unassuming figure was, in fact, a great master of painting—an artist honored with both national and international accolades. These thoughts continued to swirl in my mind until the seminar at the 'Rangayan' auditorium within the Jawahar Kala Kendra finally drew to a close.

Following the seminar, I captured a photograph of the artists as they perused the exhibition of Jyoti Swarup Ji’s paintings, and then headed toward the canteen for refreshments. During this time, the Honorable Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Diya Kumari Ji, also arrived to inaugurate the 25th Art Fair—organized by the Rajasthan Lalit Kala Akademi to mark the occasion of Rajasthan Day—and I was privileged to have the opportunity to pay my respects to her. Furthermore, I also had the chance to catch a glimpse of the magnificent theatrical production of the *Mahabharata*, being staged at the Open Theatre within the Jawahar Kala Kendra.

I also attended the 25th Art Fair—which commenced today at the 'Shilp Gram' (Crafts Village) within the Jawahar Kala Kendra—marking my first visit as a spectator after a hiatus of twelve years. It was a deeply moving experience to realize that my contemporary artist peers had not forgotten me. As I reconnected with them, I felt as though—after drifting in a vast ocean for many years—I had finally rediscovered my lost ship today; finding it, along with all its captains and fellow crewmates, in the exact same form and spirit in which I had originally lost it.
All in all, such was my Rajasthan Day today—spent at Jaipur’s Jawahar Kala Kendra, where I immersed myself simultaneously in three distinct artistic spheres: approaching the senior artists with a spirit of reverence, engaging with my contemporary peers with a sense of camaraderie, and witnessing the theatrical performance with the appreciative eye of a true theater aficionado. Presented here for your perusal are photographs captured with my camera, commemorating Rajasthan Day—specifically, a seminar held in memory of the late Shri Jyoti Swarup Ji, and a theatrical performance of the *Mahabharata* presented by the Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur.

मित्रों आज राजस्थान दिवस की आप सभी को शुभकामनायें ! आज सुबह मेरे चंदू जो अब ललित कला में वाचस्पति / डॉक्टर चंद्रशेखर सैन हो गया है ! उसने एक निमंत्रण भेजा राजस्थान दिवस के उपलक्ष में आयोजित होने वाली एक विचार गोष्ठी के लिए ! जिसे आयोजित किया था जवाहर कला केंद्र जयपुर ने राजस्थान के प्रसिद्ध अमूर्तन कला के कलाकार स्वर्गीय श्री ज्योति स्वरुप जी के सृजन कर्म के साथ उनके व्यक्तित्व और कृतित्व पर केंद्रित करते हुए !
विचार गोष्ठी का समय रहा सायं 5 बजे का और स्थान रहा जवाहर कला केंद्र का रंगायन सभागार ! मैं ठीक 5 बजे जवाहर कला केंद्र के रंगायन सभागार के आगे उपस्थित हुआ जहाँ पर स्वर्गीय ज्योति स्वरुप जी के अमूर्तन चित्र की एक प्रदर्शनी भी लगायी हुई थी !
आप को विदित हो स्वर्गीय श्री ज्योति स्वरुप जी राजस्थान के पहले समसामयिक चित्रकार और समकालीन कला में राष्ट्रीय ललित कला के राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार पाने वाले पहले कलाकार रहे थे ! जो राजस्थान की समसामयिक कला के लिए गर्व की बात रही है !
रंगायन सभागार में प्रवेश लेते ही मैंने देखा मेरा चंदू अब डॉक्टर चंद्र शेखर सैन स्वागत करता की भूमिका में उपस्थित था साथ ही संयोजक की भूमिका में भी जो मेरे लिए अति हर्ष की बात रही ! सभागार में डॉ.श्याम सिंह कछावा ( भाई श्री ज्योति स्वरुप जी ) गोष्ठी के मुख्य वक्ता डॉ. अम्बालाल दमामी जी , वरिष्ठ पत्रकार और चित्रकार श्री विनोद भरद्वाज जी , कला विद मुख्य वक्ता आर बी गौतम जी भी उपस्थित थे ! उनसे आशीर्वाद लेते हुए उनकी एक दो तस्वीर भी ली मैंने मेरे कैमरा से विचार गोष्ठी के आरम्भ होने से पूर्व ! मुझे अग्रिम पंक्ति में सभागार में बैठने का अवसर मिला ! साथ ही मुझे सौभाग्य ये भी मिला की पद्मश्री गायक अनी - गनी उस्तादों के साथ बैठने और उनसे बीकानेर के विषय में भी बात करने का अवसर मिला संगोष्ठी से पूर्व ! वही स्वर्गीय कला गुरु श्री सुमहेन्द्र शर्मा जी के पुत्र श्री संदीप शर्मा जी का भी साथ मिला इस संगोष्ठी में ! उनके साथ के पलों का भी मैंने सेल्फी इमेज लिया मेरी मेमोरी के लिए !
रंगायन में सभी मुख्य वक्ताओं के आने पर विचार गोष्ठी को आरम्भ किया गया ! उद्घोषक ने मंच पर सभी मुख्य वक्ताओं को आमंत्रित किया साथ ही श्रोता गणो का भी नाम उच्चारित किया उसमे मेरा नाम भी लिया गया जो मेरी उपस्थिति दर्ज करवा रहा था पुरे सदन में एक वरिष्ठ कलाकार के सम्मान में उपस्थित होने के लिए ! सो साधुवाद जवाहर कला केंद्र की टीम को और संयोजक डॉक्टर चंद्रशेखर सैन को !
एक घंटे की उस विचार गोष्ठी को संचालित किया डॉ. श्याम सिंह कछावा जी ने तो पेनल में मंच पर वक्ता के रूप में रहे कला समीक्षक श्री हेमंत शेष , कला संस्कृति के लेखक डॉ. अम्बालाल दमामी ,वरिष्ठ पत्रकार / चित्रकार श्री विनोद भरद्वाज जी , कला विद आर बी गौतम जी और लंदन से ऑनलाइन के जरिये जुड़े वक्ता डॉक्टर सुरेश दिमाम ! मंच पर स्वर्गीय ज्योति स्वरुप जी की पुत्री को भी आमंत्रित किया गया और जवाहर कला केंद्र के निदेशक और पदमश्री अनी - गनी जी के हाथों उपरणा / दुपटा और एक फोल्डर सभी मंचासीन प्रबुद्ध जन को भेंट किया गया उनके सम्मान में !
विचार गोष्ठी में पहले पहल स्वर्गीय ज्योति स्वरुप जी के सृजन यात्रा का विस्तृत परिचय दिया डॉ. श्याम सिंह कछावा जी ने और उनके बाद माइक्रोफोन दिया गया श्री हेमंत शेष जी को आप ज्योति स्वरुप जी के मित्रों मैसे एक रहे है ! आप ने 1960 के दसक के समकालीन राजस्थान की कला का प्रथम प्रहरी कहा स्वर्गीय ज्योति स्वरुप जी को ! आप ने उनके अमूर्तन चित्रण में ध्वनि की चित्र श्रृंखला और भीतर का जंगल चित्र श्रृंखला को श्रेष्ठ सृजन कहा !
आप के बाद माइक्रोफोन दिया गया डॉ. अम्बालाल जी को आप ने भी कुछ नोट किये हुए बिंदु पढ़े ज्योति स्वरुप जी के सृजन कर्म पर जिसमे उन्होंने ज्योति स्वरुप जी के चित्रण कार्य की शैली और माध्यम के साथ तकनीक को व्याख्यायित किया ज्योति स्वरुप जी जितने अच्छे चित्रकार थे उतने ही अच्छे कवि , वैज्ञानिक और मूर्तिकार भी थे उनका एक मूर्ति शील म्यूरल रिलीफ रूप में जयपुर सिंधी केम्प में आज भी स्थापित है !
कला विद आर बी गौतम साहब ने अपने उद्बोधन में कहा की मैंने और ज्योति स्वरुप जी ने ऐ एच मुलर के चित्रों को देखकर ही चित्रण कार्य आरम्भ किया पर बाद में ज्योति स्वरुप दिल्ली की आर्ट कॉलेज में जाने के बाद अपनी मौलिक अमूर्तन कला को निखार पाए ! जो उन्हें राजस्थान के अन्य समकालीन कलाकारों से भिन्न कर गयी !
वरिष्ठ पत्रकार और चित्रकार श्री विनोद भारद्वाज जी ने भी अपनी बात कहते हुए अपनी और ज्योति स्वरुप जी से जो मित्रता रही निकटता रही उसका जिक्र करते हुए उनके धीर गंभीर चित्रकार होने की बात कही ! आप ने उनके अमूर्तन चित्रण में विश्व कला परिदृश्य की परख और समझ के आधार पर चित्रण करने की बात की हामी भरी !
जब मैं उस विचार गोष्ठी को सुन रहा था रंगायन में उस पल मुझे भी जवाहर कला केंद्र के एक मीटिंग हॉल की अतीत की संगोष्ठी का स्मरण हुआ जिसमे स्वर्गीय ज्योति स्वरुप जी , कला समीक्षक डॉ नन्द किशोर आचार्य जी , जवाहर कला केंद्र के पूर्व निदेशक के साथ कई वरिष्ठ और युवा कलाकार उपस्थित थे और उस संगोष्ठी में मैं भी उपस्थित था ! तब ज्योति स्वरुप जी ने अपनी एक यात्रा का जिक्र किया जो की शक्ति पीठ हिंग्लजमाता बलूचिस्तान ( वर्तमान मे पाकिस्तान में स्थित है ) का किया ! आप ने बताया की जब मैंने हिंगलाज माता का दर्शन करने को गुफा में प्रवेश लिया तो वहाँ के पुजारी ने उन्हें प्रतिबद्ध किया इस बात के लिए की इस गुफा में जाने के बाद जो भी आप देखो गे , दर्शन करोगे ,अनुभूत करोगे उसका भूलकर भी कभी किसी के सामने जिक्र नहीं करोगे ! आप ने उस प्रतिबंधन को आजीवन बनाये रखा पर उस यात्रा के बाद आप के चित्र और आप का व्यक्तित्व काफी बदल गया ! उनके अमूर्तन चित्र में आज भी वो चुपी वो अनकही अनुभूति परिलक्षित होती है उन्हें संगोष्ठी में सुनने के बाद मुझे तो यही अनुभूत होता रहा है उनके अमूर्तन चित्रों में " अनकहा मौन कुछ कहने को आतुर " !
ज्योति स्वरुप जी एक सरल हृदयी , जुझारू , सादगी पूर्ण जीवन जीने वाले अपनी साइकिल , हिमाचली टोपी और एक थेला उनकी पहचान थी ! वे अक्सर हमारे राजस्थान स्कुल ऑफ़ आर्ट कॉलेज आया करते या उसके आगे से गुजरते कोई उन्हें देख कर ये कह नहीं सकता था की ये सरलसा दिखने वाला व्यक्तित्व चित्रकला का एक महान कलाकार और राष्ट्रीय और अंतराष्ट्रीय सम्मान से सम्मानित व्यक्ति है ! ये सब बाते मेरे जहन में घूमती रही जब तक विचार गोष्ठी का समाहार न हुआ जवाहर कला केंद्र के रंगायन सभागार में !
संगोष्ठी के बाद मैंने एक फोटो ज्योति स्वरुप जी के चित्रों की चित्र प्रदर्शनी के अवलोकन करते हुए कलाकारों का लिया फिर जलपान ग्रहण करने को केंटीन की ओर प्रस्थान किया ! इस बिच राजस्थान के उप मुख्यमंत्री माननीय दिया कुमारी जी भी राजस्थान दिवस के उपलक्ष में आयोजित होने वाले राजस्थान ललित कला अकादमी के 25 वे कला मेला का उद्घाटन करने को पधारे सो उन्हें भी प्रणाम करने का अवसर मुझे मिला ! तो जवाहर कला केंद्र के ओपन थिएटर में आयोजित भव्य नाटक महाभारत का भी एक झलक अवलोकन करने का अवसर मिला !
जवाहर कला केंद्र के शिल्प ग्राम में आज से आरम्भ हुए 25 वे कला मेले में भी मैंने 12 वर्ष बाद उपस्थिति एक दर्शक के रूप में दी ! और अनुभूत किया की मेरे समकालीन कलाकार साथी मुझे भूले नहीं है !उनसे मिलते हुए मुझे अनुभूत हुआ की मानो विशाल समुन्द्र में कई बरसो बाद मुझे मेरा खोया हुआ जहाज आज फिर से मिल गया उन सभी कप्तानों और मर्चेंट साथियों के साथ उसी स्वरुप में जिस स्वरुप मैं मैंने उसे खोया था !
कुल मिलकर ऐसा रहा आज का मेरा राजस्थान दिवस जयपुर के जवाहर कला केंद्र में एक साथ तीन कला गतिविधि में उपस्थिति जिसमे वरिष्ठ कलाकार के लिए सम्मान का भाव , समकालीन कलाकारों के साथ मैत्रीय भाव एक कला रसिक के रूप में और नाट्य प्रस्तुति के लिए एक नट दर्शक का भाव रखते हुए !
यहां मेरे कैमरा से लिए गए छाया चित्र आप के अवलोकन हेतु स्वर्गीय श्री ज्योति स्वरुप जी की स्मृति में विचार गोष्ठी और जवाहर कला केंद्र जयपुर की और से नाट्य प्रस्तुति महाभारत के राजस्थान दिवस के उपलक्ष की !
